KEEPING SOUTHERN HOSPITALITY ALIVE IN THE NEW MILLENNIUM

Lemonade

Difficulty Level is 1 (on a Scale of 1 to 5)

INGREDIENTS for SIMPLE SYRUP:

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup water

PREPARE the SIMPLE SYRUP:

Stir sugar and water together in a 1-1/2 quart pot or saucepan. Bring to a boil and cook 4 to 5 minutes, or until sugar is completely dissolved. Remove from heat and cool. Pour into a jar with a lid and store in refrigerator until ready to use.

INGREDIENTS for LEMONADE:

  • 1 cup simple syrup
  • 1 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice (you'll need about 6-8 lemons, depending on their juiciness)
  • 6-8 cups water
  • ice cubes

PREPARE the LEMONADE:

Fill a half-gallon pitcher about halfway with ice cubes. Add the simple syrup and lemon juice to the pitcher. Then add enough water to fill your pitcher. Stir to distribute the lemon juice and simple syrup evenly. You can adjust the sweetness of the lemonade by adding more or less simple syrup. This recipe can be doubled or tripled for large quantities.

Makes 1/2 gallon.

SINGLE SERVING:

Combine 4 Tablespoons lemon juice and 4 Tablespoons simple syrup in an 8-ounce glass. Fill with water and ice. Stir to combine.

HELPFUL TIP: When making lemonade by-the-glass, I can't do without my Norpro Stainless Steel Citrus Juicer. It makes juicing citrus fruits a snap and it's dishwasher safe to boot. Who wants to lug out the electric juicer for only one or two lemons? I'd rather have a little extra time to enjoy every sip of my delicious lemonade!

MAKE YOUR LEMONADE SPARKLE:

Before filling glasses, rub a wedge of lemon around the rim of each glass. Spread a cup of granulated sugar on a plate and dip the rim of each glass in the sugar. Give the glass a twist to coat the entire rim. Tap lightly to remove excess sugar. Fill glasses with ice and delicious homemade lemonade. Garnish with an extra wedge of lemon.

IF LIFE DOESN'T GIVE YOU LEMONS, TRY THIS:

Nothing is easier or more refreshing than this summertime beverage. A sweet, eighty-year-old southern lady served it to me one hot July day as I sat on her front porch. I complimented her on the drink and she gave me the recipe. I was surprised something so simple could be so delicious!
