Pound Cake

Difficulty Level is 3 (on a Scale of 1 to 5)

Bake your best pound cake ever with this must-have recipe, using only 7 simple ingredients.

  • 2 sticks butter or margarine
  • 3 cups granulated sugar
  • 6 eggs
  • 1/2 pint sour cream
  • 3 cups cake flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon soda
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Preheat oven to 300 degrees.

Cream butter and sugar; add eggs one at a time beating thoroughly after each addition. Stir in sour cream and vanilla.

Sift flour and soda together 3 times and then add to creamed mixture. Mix well.

Grease a 10-inch tube pan, then line the pan with parchment paper. Be sure to wrap a piece of paper around the center tube. This makes it very easy to remove the cake from the pan. Pour cake batter into pan and bake 1-1/2 hours at 300 degrees. Cool in pan, then invert onto wire rack to finish cooling.

Enjoy it plain or dress it with fresh berries and cream or your favorite dessert sauce.

My daughter, Annabelle, has my passion for baking everything from scratch. When she worked in New York City, she baked cakes and cookies and shared them in her office. A co-worker of hers once bragged that she had made a homemade cake for her husband's birthday, "frosting and everything." When my daughter asked what recipe she used, the woman seemed perplexed, "What do you mean, recipe?" she asked, "I just followed the instructions on the back of the box! How do YOU make a cake?" Annabelle replied, "I measure out the flour, sugar, baking soda..." Looking shocked, the woman said, "You do all THAT?" "Yes," said Annabelle, laughing, "that's what a homemade cake is!"
